Hōkūlea
in Yap and Palau
As part of the voyage to Micronesia, Hōkūlea
completed a 500 mile round trip journey from Yap to Palau. Joining
the voyage was the Alingano Maisu, a new canoe built by Nā
Kalaiwa'a Moku o Hawai'i and gifted to the people of Yap and Micronesia.
Captain and navigator Nainoa Thompson led the crew to Palau, which
included staff of The Nature Conservancy and Mālama Hawai‘i.

Mālama
Maunalua
Mālama Maunalua is a recently formed community-based
initiative dedicated to creating a more culturally and ecologically
healthy Maunalua region in Southeast O'ahu. Mālama Maunalua
works in partnership with the Polynesian Voyaging Society, Mālama
Hawai'i, The Nature Conservancy, Hui Nalu Canoe Club, State Dept.
of Land and Natural Resources, and many, many others. |

I Ke Kai
A benefit for Pūnana Leo O Kawaiaha’o, this annual event
brings together many environmental and cultural groups to share
information on caring for our ocean to the public. Mālama Hawai‘i
has been a regular participating group. |

World
Ocean Day, Hawai‘i
June 8 was designated as World Ocean Day at the Earth Summit in
Rio de Janeiro in 1992. However, it has not yet been officially
designated by the United Nations. Kai Makana, a non-profit organization
in Hawai’i, is working to lead our state to embrace World
Ocean Day through work with children. |

Hōkūlea
Sets on Statewide Sail 2005
Crewmembers of the Polynesian Voyaging Society have embarked on
a five month statewide sail of the renowned voyaging canoe Hōkūlea,
revisiting significant sites and honoring community leaders important
in its 30 year history. |

Festivals
Mālama Hawai‘i has supported the Kōkua
Foundation by participating in its annual Kōkua Festivals.
The Kōkua Festival (http://www.kokuafestival.com/news.htm)
features Jack Johnson, Hawai'i's own Grammy nominated musician committed
to sustainability and environmental education. |

Energy Lite Expos
In
recognition of national Energy Awareness Month in October, the Hawaiian
Electric Company has partnered, in 2004 and 2005, with Mālama
Hawai'i, Ala Moana Center, the State Dept. of Business, Economic
Development & Tourism and the U.S. Dept. of Energy to host a
fun-filled event focused on raising the awareness of the importance
of energy conservation. |
